About This Plant

Ceanothus ‘Joyce Coulter’ is a fast-growing medium sized shrub 3 – 5 feet tall with a spread of as much as 10 feet.  ‘Joyce Coulter’ is a random (chance) hybrid of Ceanothus papillosus var. roweanus and Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. griseus.   It has small, bright green leaves with interesting texture.  ‘Joyce Coulter’s medium blue flower clusters appear in early winter lasting through spring.  With the typical tidy appearance of all California Lilacs, it is an excellent mounding groundcover with trailing branches and handsome foliage. This Ceanothus is very adaptable in garden situations and will tolerate regular irrigation and heavy soils. It is best grown in coastal gardens avoid planting in areas with extreme heat unless in light shade.  ‘Joyce Coulter’ was selected by John E. Coulter at his San Carlos, California, nursery in 1956.  Named in honor of Coulter’s wife, Joyce, it was introduced into the nursery trade in1962 by Saratoga Horticultural Foundation.   This selection remains popular with gardeners to this day who use it to spill over walls and cover banks.  Plant with compatible natives such as Fremontodendron species and Salvia leucophylla ‘Point Sal’.
