Design-Build Landscapers: Floriferous Landscaping - The Sea Ranch, CA

On the coast of northern California, nestled in the community of The Sea Ranch, extreme environmental conditions and tight design oversight provide the perfect conditions for the creation of unique, sustainable landscapes.

One such landscape was created and maintained by Floriferous Landscaping.  This bluff-top property is one of several clustered units that overlooks the Pacific (when the weather permits).

Unforgiving winds, cold winters, warm summers, and a host of other perennial challenges encourage the use of native plants throughout the property.  Myrica californica (Pacific Wax Myrtle), Garrya elliptica (Coast silktassel), Baccharis ‘Pigeon Point’, Lupinus chamissonis (Dune Lupine), and Calamagrostis nutkaensis (Pacific Reed Grass) provide the bulk of the screening, are used to accent views, and ground the residence in its surroundings.

Simple, informal plant groupings are inconspicuous and appear as if naturally occurring.    Broad sweeps of similar plant material add to this appearance and also simplify the maintenance of the landscape.

Natural materials, such as stone, redwood, and copper are used judiciously to tie the building to the muted tones of the landscape.  Low screen walls provide modest screening and define the boundary of built to planted.

A private courtyard, hidden from public view, provides a welcomed foil to the natural landscape and helps transition from loose and organic to the rigid and angular lines of the architecture.  Offering a touch of order with geometric plantings, more traditional lines for the hardscape and raised planters, and a zen-style planting, the courtyard deftly adds just the right amount of character to the landscape.
