About This Landscape
San Marcos Garden
Landscape Architects & Garden Designers: Lane Goodkind Landscape Architects - Santa Barbara, CA
A mundane 60's tract house with bright blue trim, solid bermuda grass yard, and solitary, sickly orange tree taunted this landscape architect for months. One after another trees were planted somewhat haphazardly at first. A forest emerged. The house was then ripped open and exterior walls turned into glass.
All of the materials, with the exception of the gravel, were salvaged from on site or other nearby projects. The garden survives on a few irrigations a month during the summer.
All the downspouts were removed and replaced with rain chains and all impervious surfaces fragmented to allow permeability. With multi-layerd plantings the garden acts as a giant sponge, soaking up rainfall.
